Roby Sixth Form College

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

How is College different from Secondary School?
No bells, no uniforms, no unnecessary rules, and tutors and lecturers who actually listen to what you're saying and are willing to work with you on a one to one level.

What are time tables like? What choices of A Levels are available?
Advanced Level courses are on offer in over 25 subjects, including vocational areas. There's even a pre-degree course in Art and Design.

Will my qualification be enough to get me into University?
Of course. If you decide to go onto higher education, getting successful results at A Levels or on a Level 3 Vocational course can get you a place at university almost anywhere.

What is the workload like and will I get homework?
All students will be expected to do some homework and this will be most evident in advanced courses such as A Levels. Staff will try to ensure that workloads are not too heavy, but the real secret is how effectively you manage your own time. As long as you complete work to the best of your ability and hand it in by the set date you should be fine. We are happy to provide extra support and advice to any student who feels that workloads are too demanding.

Can I change my course if I don't like it?
Yes, you can. In the first few weeks, you will go through Right Choice. It is basically a review to find out what you think about the course so far and to find out if it really is right for you. At this point, you can still change to another subject, if you need.

Will it cost me anything to study?
If you are a full-time student under 18, you probably won’t have to pay any tuition fees. Most students will also qualify for an Educational Maintenance Allowance, which provides a weekly allowance to help students out financially. This allowance is a varying amount depending upon family income. Ask Student Services for more details.
