English Lit Students Celebrate Knowsley Reading Month - 06/10/2009
Local performer Curtis Watt visited Roby Sixth Form this week, as part of Knowsley Reading Month. A Level English Literature students were given a break from their usual studies and invited to watch Curtis perform, as well as get involved in some creative work of their own.
Curtis works as a performance poet, writing and performing poems and raps, which in his own words, are ‘thought provoking’ and contain ‘moral messages.’ The students were treated to a showcase of some of his work before being split into groups and set the challenge of writing their own ‘tetrameter’ or ‘four-footed’ verse.
With a bit of guidance from Curtis, each group rose to the challenge and came up with an original poem, which they then read out to the class. Subjects ranged from the life of Britney Spears to a retake on the story of The Three Pigs. An impressed Curtis congratulated the students on their creativity and encouraged them to continue writing.
When asked for their comments on the session, students were extremely positive saying Curtis was ’inspiring’ and his work ‘sensational.’ Curtis was also clearly pleased with the result of his visit and commented ‘I have really enjoyed today and the enthusiasm from the students and the staff has made it a real success.’
