Mayor of Knowsley Celebrates Students' Success - 04/06/2009
The Mayor of Knowsley, Councillor Dave Smithson, visited Knowsley Community College on 2nd June to congratulate students who have achieved above and beyond their level of expectation. He attended the College’s Distance Travelled event which celebrates students who have developed academically and often also personally whilst at College.
Students from across various subject areas and levels attended, each with a different story to tell about their progression, during their time at the College.
Some of the students who attended the event gave us their comments on their achievements:
Access to Higher Education: Jamie Boyle
“I left school with few qualifications and got in with the worng crowd. I decided to turn my life around and I enrolled to study GCSEs at the College I passed my GCSEs and this year I have studied on the Access course. I now hope to go to University in September and study Law. I am really proud of my achievements and coming to College has changed me for the better."
Performing Arts: Richard Harnetty
"I completed a Pre Foundation course at the College and then I decided I would try Performing Arts. At first I found it difficult to join in and I think I lacked confidence. I was given lots of support from my tutors and became involved in a show, Willy Wonka, which is when I started to really enjoy performing and I haven’t looked back since. I have enjoyed my time at the College and am proud of my 100% attendance."
Roby Sixth Form Students: Jodie Brownhill, April Bell, Siobhan Cassells, Oyinkansali Ayeni and Antonia Longley
"We feel like we have achieved loads since enrolling at College. The tutors have been really friendly and have helped us to make good progress, studying for our GCSEs."
Beauty Therapy – Customer Service: Cathrine Donnellan
"I am proud of my achievements at College so far. I have finished all my assignments on time and completed the course despite having a young baby and having to arrange childcare. I now hope to go on to complete Level 2 and 3 and eventually have my own mobile beauty salon."
The Mayor of Knowsley, also commented on the event
"It is great to see the level of commitment and dedication that students have given and it is fantastic that they are being recognised and rewarded for all their hard work. The fact that these students have achieved above their level of expectation shows that hard work really does pay off.”
