Citizenship Awards May 2009 - 15/05/2009
Knowsley Community College celebrated its annual Citizenship Award Ceremony on Friday, 1st May. The event recognises students who have contributed to the wider community, often through voluntary work, carried out outside of their College hours. In all ten students were nominated for the award; their contributions ranged form caring for family members to helping to run Community Youth groups.
The overall winner was Craig Robinson, an A Level student studying Psychology, English Language and English Literature. He was nominated by his tutor, Karin Phillips, who described him as ‘an asset to today’s youth’. Craig cares for his mother (who has a serious illness) and remains completely dedicated to his College work. He has travelled to Lourdes a number of times to care for the sick and also helps out at a local nursing home. In what is left of his spare time, Craig volunteers on a mentoring website www.horsesmouth.co.uk, where he offers counselling to people with personal problems.
Commenting on being chosen as the College winner for the Citizenship Award, Craig said: “I enjoy my volunteer work and find it very rewarding. I was shocked to be chosen as the winner, because the other students had done some really great, inspiring things. I am looking forward to going to the awards ceremony at John Moore’s University.”
As the College winner, Craig is now invited to Liverpool John Moore’s University Foundation for Citizenship Awards Presentation, which will be held on Friday 8th May. Steve Gardner, Assistant Principal for Student Services, who presented the awards said, “We are tremendously proud of all of our nominated students, and we want to celebrate the selfless work that they all put in. They are all winners. It is particularly heart-warming to hear all of these great stories when you consider the bad press that young people sometimes receive in this country. This is the real good news about young people in our community.”
