THE HOUSE OF LORDS COMES TO KNOWSLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE - 25/03/2009
On Friday, 20th March Baroness Joan Walmsley visited Knowsley Community College to give a talk to A Level students on the workings of the House of Lords. The Baroness, who hails from West Derby, and is the Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Children, Schools and Families, spoke for about an hour, and conducted a question and answer session with the students, during which she spoke about an ideal balance of elected and non-elected members.
The students were well focussed and attentive throughout the Baroness’ presentation, which had been organised by two of their tutors, Geoff Lambertsen and Paul Finnegan.

One of the students, Rhiannon Murphy, who studies A Level Law, Psychology, and English Language at the College said afterwards, “I understand the House of Lords much better now after the talk. I realise how important the House of Lords is in making politics more accountable. It was a great opportunity.”
Baroness Walmsley herself stated, “The students were very interested in the processes of Parliament, and clearly had a very good level of prior knowledge. It is so important for politicians to come and talk to groups of people on a regular basis. It brings the whole business of politics alive.”
The event was a successful example of the kind of enrichment activity that the College believes is essential to the education of today’s young citizens.
